Foster a Boxer

Fostering orphan Boxers is the most rewarding thing I have ever done in my life.  A Foster Mom or Dad is a Guardian Angel, a port in a storm, giving the dog time, a day, a week, or a month, whatever is needed to find a new home.  Some need time to recover from illness or injury, or behavior problems.  With the help of Foster Moms and Dads, abused Boxers can overcome a multitude of issues and ultimately find wonderful, forever homes.

Fostering requires energy, responsibility, and often some inconvenience.  In return you are rewarded with unconditional love, the joy of seeing the sick, wounded, scared and distrustful animal transform into a healthy, trusting, loving, happy Boxer.  Fosters provide value to society in 2 ways—by saving the lives of innocent animals, and by finding the perfect match for the Boxer and his/her new family.  The cards and letters we receive from happy new Boxer owners are many!

I love watching the parade of Boxers come through my home.  I love to watch how they change and respond to love and good care.  I love to see all the different shapes, sizes, colors, and personalities.  I love how much they are all alike and how very different from each other they are as well!  I love feeding a starving Boxer and seeing the ribs and bony butts gradually disappear! I love watching my own dogs get so happy and excited when a new foster comes to stay a while. I like to observe how my dogs show the foster dogs the ropes.  I love watching them play.  I love the really old guys with the gray muzzles, but I also love the wild pups.  I love seeing fear in their eyes turn into hesitant trust, then relax a bit after a day or so, and finally fill with excitement when they see me.  I love watching a calm scared Boxer suddenly begin to do the Boxer Wiggle whenever I walk in the door.  I love the experience of having a Boxer who ran from me on Day 1, throw himself in my lap on Day 3. I love being their strong advocate when I screen prospective new owners, and I love following up to be sure they are OK.

Anyone who has the desire to foster can find a way.  Ideally, fosters who work are able to check in their home at least every 4-5 hours in case a dog has to be crated or confined and must be let out.  Having a yard is helpful.  Having other dogs that are socialized is helpful.  Having a separate room where a dog can be kept is helpful.  But there are ways to work around these things with the help of friends, neighbors and other foster Moms and Dads. Without foster homes we simply could not exist.

Here are a few thoughts on what a Boxer Foster Parent is:

Altruistic – Must have a strong, selfless desire to help creatures that cannot help themselves.

Loving - A person who loves Boxers and wants to help the breed.  Someone who will love the most abused dog right out of their fears, building their trust through consistency and dependability.

Patient – A never-ending amount of understanding and patience to deal with a wide variety of Boxers with many different behavioral and health issues.

Kind – Someone who will always be kind and gentle to these orphans who may not always behave perfectly.

Observant – Keen eyes to seek out any health issues or problems.

Willing – A person open to doing whatever needs to be done for the dog, from driving the Boxer to a vet appointment to showing the dog to prospective new owners, to teaching the dog to sit, to giving the dog a bath.

Supportive – To always be an advocate for the dog.

Strong – You must be strong enough to be able to control these powerful, strong-willed dogs. You must be committed, and not one to give up at the first sign of adversity or trouble.

Fun loving – Boxers are clowns and so much fun - fostering is a joy!  If you have dog‑friendly dogs, they will love the fosters as much as you do!  And more importantly it is the most fun to watch a scared dog come out of its shell and blossom under your care.
