Please Help these Medical Dogs
|
Luigi suddenly developed a milky white film over his eyes - turns out he has cataracts in both eyes and is essentially blind. We may be able to do a cataract removal for one of his eyes so he can regain at least part of his vision. It's very expensive to do both eyes (over $5000) so we are looking for a way to give him a good quality of life while staying afloat as a rescue by being prudent with our limited funds. We also need to find out what caused the cataracts in the first place and that will take further diagnosis.
In addition, we need to find another foster home for him as he is also experiencing a serious allergy problem which may be related to his current surroundings. We hope a change in his living environment will help him.
Luigi is only three years old and generally a very happy boy with loads of energy. But he has a lot of needs; perhaps you are that special home that can help him heal and adjust to having no sight.
Ideally a foster home that has experience with dogs with limited sight would be best but we realize that will be hard to find. If you have no dogs right now, perhaps you can open your doors to both Luigi and his buddy Roxy; they live together now and he relies on her in many ways. If not, he needs a home with a submissive female that he can follow around and play with. If not Roxy or another submissive female, then he'd likely do best in an only dog home.
He also needs a home without a pool or at least a fenced pool to keep him safe. The highest fatality rate for dogs in Arizona is due to drowning in the family swimming pool so it's imperative that it be properly fenced so he doesn't fall in; obviously he's at a disadvantage due to his loss of sight. Also, a home with few steps so there are no major falling hazards. His blindness happened suddenly and he is trying to adjust. Limited landscaping would be a plus, too. We think some of his allergies may be related to plantings in the yard.
We are hoping to perform surgery on at least one eye to give him back partial sight but our funds are limited and he continues to undergo further diagnosis.
In the meantime, we are desperately looking for Luigi's new home. We'd love to talk to any prospective foster that will give him the love he needs to heal and adapt. Could it be you? .
From all of us at Boxer Luv Rescue, a big Thank you! |

We don't know one person who has not been impacted by the decline of the economy. Yet our Boxer Luv volunteers and supporters continue to give what can be given during these difficult times. As many of you know, our rescue too has been impacted by the economy, not only with a decrease in adoptions, but a significant increase in rescue dogs. It seems we also have been hit pretty hard recently with some major medical issues like broken legs, distemper and the dreaded Parvo.
Boxer Luv rescue recently took in a beautiful reverse brindle boy (approximately 6 months old), named Donnie. Initially Donnie appeared to be a healthy, energetic boxer puppy. Although Donnie spent his entire life as an "outside dog', he immediately showed how smart he was by potty and doggie door training within the first 3-4 days. Donnie was quick to steal the hearts of his foster family. However, over the last couple of days, Donnie stopped eating and began throwing up. Now, Donnie is fighting for his life. After x-rays ,multiple blood and fecal tests, Donnie was diagnosed with Parvo, in-spite of being vaccinated. Donnie was admitted into the hospital on Monday morning, however, his condition has worsened. Because Donnie has not responded to traditional treatment, he is now receiving plasma infusions, this has been successful with previous BLR parvo puppies, so we are hopeful this will turn the corner for him.
Our supporters have been incredibly generous and we don't want us to over use our "pleas for help", but we are asking if anyone is able to support Donnie's medical, any little bit, would be extremely appreciated. We already received a couple donations for Donnie's plasma infusion, however, Donnie's bill was large to begin with and now is becoming even larger.
If you are able to contribute to Donnie's cause, you can send a check to the BLR Post Office Box: PO Box 47777, Phoenix, AZ 85068-7777 - please indicate on your check "Donnie's Medical". Yuu can also click on the paypal button, but they do take a percentage and every penny helps the rescue.
Thank you all for you do, our rescue could not exist without each and everyone!!!
update 11/2/09
Great news about Donnie, our parvo pup. He came home on Saturday and is continuing to recover very well. His energy level is almost completely back, he still gets a little tired at night but most importantly, his appetite is back. He is eating a fairly bland, low fat diet as his tummy has experienced quite a trama, but we are introducing his regular food into his diet slowly, the next hurdle is weight gain.
Thank you all who sent positive thoughts and prayers and those who also contributed funding to his care. We still have quite a bill, however, every little bit helps and goes a long way...
I will be sending pictures as we progress, we have about a 6-8 week total recovery anticipated. |

Bucky - this boy was found with an injured rear leg. BLR was called to rescue this sweet boy who was found limping and wandering the streets. After an examination, by our vet, it was determined he has a broken tibia and will require surgery to correct.
Despite the discount we receive from our vet, Buddy's suregery and other medical costs are estimated at over $2,000.
Update - Bucky has had surgery and is recovering at his foster parent's home. He is doing well, but his vet bills were high.

Can you please make a donation to Buddy's medical fund? This beautiful boy and BLR say "Thank you". |
